Choosing incense

Incense is mostly a question of what you want the room to do. Something bright and resinous to clear a space after a long day is a different purchase from something soft and floral to sleep near.

Sticks or resin?

Sticks are the straightforward option: light, blow out, leave in a holder. The scent is even and predictable and burns for around half an hour.

Resin on a stick sits between the two traditions — raw resin pressed onto a bamboo core. It burns hotter and heavier than a standard stick, closer to the smell of resin on charcoal, without the charcoal disc. Frankincense, myrrh, copal and dragon’s blood all belong to this older, deeper family of scents.

By what you want from the room

  • Clearing and resetting — white sage, palo santo, frankincense, dragon’s blood. Sharp, resinous, unmistakably ceremonial.
  • Winding down — lavender, chamomile, ylang ylang. Soft, floral, low and warm.
  • Focus and work — lemongrass, cinnamon, patchouli. Bright or spiced enough to keep a room feeling awake.
  • Warmth and comfort — vanilla, rose, sandalwood. The ones that read as cosy rather than ceremonial.

Burning it properly

Light the tip, let it catch for a few seconds, then blow the flame out so it glows rather than burns. Use a holder that catches ash, keep it away from anything that moves air — an open window or a fan will make it burn unevenly and twice as fast — and never leave it unattended. One stick is enough for most rooms; two will be overpowering in a small one.

Pairing

Incense and tea work on the same principle: a few minutes of doing one thing deliberately. If you are building an evening routine, try a resin alongside a caffeine-free loose leaf blend, or a journal if you would rather write than scroll.
